SWIM LESSONS

 

Swimming is a life skill, a great exercise and a challenging sport. Keep your child safe and healthy today by registering them in swim lessons here at our Y. We offer swim lessons for all ages, all levels and needs. Group classes begin every 8 weeks during our Program Sessions. Please see our Schedules to see the days and times lessons are offered.

SWIM STARTERS

PARENT/CHILD CLASSES (AGES 6 MONTHS - 36 MONTHS)

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills. Parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.

 

PARENT/CHILD A: WATER DISCOVERY Ages 6 months - 24 months

Accompany your child while they gain comfort in the water and develop essential swim readiness skills through a fun, confidence building experience.

 

PARENT/CHILD B: WATER EXPLORATION Ages 24 months - 36 months

With guidance from an instructor, work in the pool with your child on basic swim body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and swim skills.

 

SWIM BASICS

PRE-SCHOOL (AGES 3-5 YEARS)

YOUTH (AGES 6-12 YEARS)

ADULT (AGES 13 and up)

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: Swim, float, swim and Jump, push, turn, grab.

 

STAGE 1: WATER ACCLIMATION

Designed for beginner swimmers to help your child develop comfort in the water with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

 

STAGE 2: WATER MOVEMENT

Students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice jump, push, turn and grab.

 

STAGE 3: WATER STAMINA

Students learn how to safely swim for longer distance than in previous stages. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action. Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social emotional, and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

 

SWIM STROKES

PRE-SCHOOL (AGES 3-5 YEARS)

YOUTH (AGES 6-12 YEARS)

ADULT  (AGES 13 and up)

Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

 

STAGE 4: STROKE INTRODUCTION

Students develop stroke technique in front and now

back crawl, and learn the breaststroke and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

 

STAGE 5: STROKE DEVELOPMENT

Build stamina in front and back crawl through stroke technique drills, while learning all major competitive strokes including breaststroke and butterfly. Water safety focus continues through treading water and sidestroke.

 

STAGE 6: STROKE MECHANICS

Students refine stroke technique and enhance on all major competitive strokes, while learning about competitive swimming including flip turns. Students discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle and build endurance in deep water.
